Who do you see yourself as? If I called you powerful, brave and strong right now, would you believe me?
Gideon wasn’t very accepting of those names. Judges 6:12 says “When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior”. But Gideon was instead left wondering how that could even be true considering they had been oppressed by the Midianites for far too long. He was called by his true name, by his true identity but the conditions he was so focused on could not make him believe it.
What about you? What do you believe? What image do you have of yourself? Do you consider yourself blessed, strong, powerful and mighty as the word of the lord says? Look at this conversation between God and Gideon:
The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” Pardon me, my Lord, “Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh and I am the least in my family.
Gideon identified himself by his physical abilities and weaknesses. Do you do the same? How do you identify yourself? What would you have said to God if it were you? “I haven’t really been consistent enough in the past, I don’t think I have the abilities to do this because I haven’t really tried anything like it before?”
Would you see and identify yourself by your mistakes, pasts and abilities? Regardless, I have good news for you. God replied Gideon,
The LORD answered, “I will be with you and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive”.
I will be with you! The reason why you can is not because of ‘you’ but because of God. The most interesting thing about these people – Moses, Gideon – is that they all had doubts, insecurity and identity crises. Each time they said to God.
“Me? Do you really mean me? How can I? I am not capable, I have never done anything like this before, and I am very weak. In fact, I am the weakest in my family”
But… God replied with the very same answer, “I will be with you”
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
And God said, “I will be with you.
The focus isn’t so much on who we are but on who God is? Finding out who you are and what you can do is to find out who God is and what HE can do, after all his Spirit lives within us.
To your doubts about yourself, to your incapability, to your deficiencies, to your weaknesses. God is giving the same answer, “I WILL BE WITH YOU”. And we should give thanks all the more, because in our weaknesses is where God’s strength is made perfect!
Today, when doubts about your abilities come rushing in, I want you to say to yourself “God is with me.”
