ASSURANCE

I’m sure we’ve all heard Davido’s song: assurance. Well, if you’re not familiar with the entire plot, he bought a 45 Million naira Porsche for his girlfriend. The entire gist stirred up a lot of reactions from my fellow Nigerians. While some demanded that they wanted their boyfriends to follow suit (I pity them, lol), others claimed it wasn’t necessary. Well, whatever the case may be, thinking on Davido’s act made me learn a lot about my own love walk with God.

Even if we’re not familiar with Davido’s song, we should have at least heard the way older, gospel version … hehe: Blessed assurance. Anyways both songs teach a very big lesson. First, love can be proven or guaranteed with what is given. Second, we as believers have received our own assurance from our lover.

Ephesians 1:13-14    And you also became God’s people when you heard the true message, the Good News that brought you salvation. You believed in Christ, and God put his stamp of ownership on you by giving you the Holy Spirit he had promised. The Spirit is the guarantee that we shall receive what God has promised his people, and this assures us that God will give complete freedom to those who are his. Let us praise his glory!

See? Just the same way Davido decided to pledge his love to his babe by giving her an assurance. We in Christ have received a more valuable, incorruptible assurance of our own: The very spirit of God. His word teaches us that his spirit is the guarantee that we would receive all that God has promised us. The same way Davido expects the car to be a guarantee that their relationship would last even unto marriage, the Holy Spirit is God’s guarantee of eternity.

So dear believer never forget, you have received an assurance, a guarantee that you would be saved when Christ returns. He isn’t going to abandon you or forget you, his spirit is proof of this. And it’s very important to note that that spirit does not leave the believer for any reason!

Finally, Davido’s act should teach us something: As it would be offensive, or worse still, insulting for Chioma to doubt Davido’s love after that kind of gift, it would be also very out of place for the believer to doubt God’s love or even its eternal nature after he has given us his spirit. Do you believe the gospel? If yes, then you have received the Holy Spirit as an assurance of eternity with God.

I have assurance! I am guaranteed of an eternity with the one who loves me! There is no doubting here!

Glory!
