Hebrews 5:11-14 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
This scripture is one we as believers should take note of. First of all, the author here intended to share several things with his audience but because they were dull or more accurately, slothful, he couldn’t. The verses above give us two important traits mature believers share:
1. Mature believers are able to teach others
A believer on the path of growth should have undoubtedly gone through the training of teachers. And not just any type, those who rightly divide the word of truth. Teachers are gifts to the body, given by God for the edification of the church. This means that, we need their influence over our lives if we are to grow, it’s not enough to stay in a corner and want to learn “on your own”. However, like Hebrews suggests, the proof of proper teaching is the ability to teach others. A mature believer is one who has learnt under accurate teachers of the word, studied personally and as a result is able to teach others the very things he or she has learnt.
2 Timothy 2:2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
2. Mature believers are able to tell the difference between right and wrong teachings
We live in a time where several opinions to scripture and Christianity exist. But we should learn to realise that truth is objective. We can’t say different things and both be correct, that’s not the nature of truth. So then, another major proof of maturity is the ability to know which teaching is accurate and which isn’t. Needless to say, this follows from having being properly trained in the word under teachers and personally. This raises the need to be taught well. Right from the basics of what the gospel actually and how to carry out bible interpretation. This cannot be overemphasized today because if these basics concepts are not properly understood, all other subsequent studies would just be paddling in the wrong direction.
So dear believer, desire to grow up! Pay attention to sound teaching, give yourself to it and your growth would become evident to everyone around you. You would become a mature believer, ready to teach others and also discern between right or wrong (doctrine).
