You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. This is a popular proverb and for anyone who doesn’t know what it means, it simply refers to how you can provide someone with a great opportunity but you cannot force them to take it.
People often expect divine leading to be automatic, like an autopilot scenario where everything just falls into place independent of your participation. But that’s not what it’s like,
God’s leading in your life is not independent of your partnership.
God didn’t force Moses to do the talking when he insisted not to because he stuttered. God instead said “alright, let Aaron do the talking” (Exo 4:10-16). You would be wrong to think that just because something is God’s will for your life means that He is going to force it on you, or see to it that it is automatically achieved.
Take the salvation of all men for instance, it is God’s heart desire for all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim 2:4). It matters so much to Him, yet He doesn’t force it on anyone, so what makes you think His plans for your life will be achieved automatically or independent of your partnership? If you are going to see God’s plan for your life fulfilled you are going to have to partner with the HolySpirit, you are going to have to be willing to say yes even when you don’t understand. You can’t cherry pick the leading of the Spirit, you can’t follow it when you feel like and ignore it when you don’t, that’s not how it works.
You have to first be surrendered to the Spirit of God, you need to trust that He has your best interest at heart and He does. The Bible lets us know that we are extremely precious to God.
What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. – Mat 10:29-31 NLT
You are His most precious possession, He laid his life down for you so that you will live eternally. If you can trust Him for eternity, what is a hundred years?
You have a Father who isn’t bound by time, He literally knows the end from the beginning. We know that we are more likely to be successful if we ask someone who has gone through what we’re going through to give us guidance. We know that they can give us advice that is peculiar and hinged on sight, having seen what we haven’t yet seen. Likewise God knows the end from the beginning;
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure – Isa 46:10 KJV
You can trust Him to lead you. You don’t get to stumble through life confused, God leads you dear believer.
“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. –Isa 30:21 KJV
God is capable of leading us with absolute clarity, are you seeking his leading? Are you trusting him for your future, or are you the one holding the reins? Partner with the spirit of God today and always. Pray and ask God, “is there anything you would have me be doing now that I’m not doing? Is there something you would have me step away from that I’m currently in?” Ask Him to lead you and He will.
And just in case you’re wondering if divine leading is for a select few, I need to let you know, or remind you of who can be led; Every single believer, no believer is left out of enjoying divine leading.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. – Rom 8:14 KJV
This verse reveals that if you are a child of God, that is, if you have believed the message of the gospel and trusted in Christ for your salvation, you are led by the spirit of God.
How then does God lead? Through nudges, clear cut prophecies in your spirit and promptings when we pray, and through His word. If you ever need leading pray!
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. -Act 13:2 KJV.
In Acts 16:6-9, the HolySpirit led Paul and Silas away from certain regions and to Macedonia. You have the spirit of God living in you and He is more than willing to lead you, so if you seek His guidance, He will freely, graciously and with much excitement give it to you. God loves when we trust Him because He is trustworthy. I also remember that one of the most popular responses on God’s leading is through His word; by reading your bible. It is an ageless principle. God has expressly revealed his heart and men full of the spirit have written about it for you to read and know Him and His desire for you.
Read your Bible and you will have less questions like; God what is your will, there is this beautiful girl that isn’t a believer, should I marry her? It is already written expressly not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Cor 6:14-16). You won’t be asking; God I don’t know if it’s your will for me to preach to my unsaved colleague, because you would already know His will to have everyone saved (1Tim 2:4). The reason why you may not be hearing anything in that direction may be because God has already spoken about it in His word, so study your Bible.
You can trust God for all aspects of your life; career, relationships, friendships, health, in every single area, so long as it matters to you, it is personal to God. He has plans for you that are bigger and greater than anything you got, so trust Him and ask for His guidance through prayer.
Also don’t worry if you’ve made a misstep, and it doesn’t matter how many, God is capable of getting you back on track. He is an excellent Father, patient and loving, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and love. No matter how many missteps you’ve made, be it on purpose or not, trust Him to realign you, He is your Daddy and He cares and will do just that.
As a believer you are freely entitled to supernatural guidance, refuse to have it any other way. Trust God and follow His leading. It really doesn’t matter how big the plans God has for you, if you don’t partner with His Spirit you really won’t see it. Remember it is not independent of your participation. Don’t try to fulfill God’s dreams in your strength or by your own wisdom, it won’t work. Partner with His Spirit. Obey the small promptings and leadings because future leadings depend on that. Live a supernaturally natural life everyday full of divine leading because that is your birthright as a believer.
It is my sincere prayer that at the end of your life you will be able to confidently say that everything God wanted you to do you did, that you took the right step at every turn even when it didn’t look like it then because you trusted the Leading of the HolyGhost and partnered with Him for your life. Amen.
