Everyone can attest to the fact that this year isn’t what they expected it to be in the least bit, we have seen so much happen in this relatively short period of time that it’s probably overwhelming for some of us. A lot of expectations have been disappointed, goals abandoned, new year resolutions drowned in waves of bad news, and the taste of sweet possibilities replaced with the bitterness of loss, disappointments, and broken dreams. The year has been one big roller coaster with more downs than ups, going down when we think it can’t get any lower, and with all of the happenings going on It’s easy to fall into a place of sadness and hopelessness at life. Even as believers, it is probable that these events can discourage our trust in God but it is at this time that we’re to buckle up the most! It might look like this is the end but believe me, we’re only just starting, This is the time to encourage ourselves in the Lord and take up that mantle that has been placed on our shoulders!
The Apostle Paul likens believers to soldiers fighting in a war in his second letter to Timothy, and when it comes to wars, there are battles that look like they’d be lost but end up being won; that’s how it is for us too, but in this case, we’ve won the victory already! 2020 might look so bleak with no light at the end of the tunnel, but let’s not be quick to drop the shovel, We have been given victory in Christ as Paul says in 1Corinthians 15:5. It is therefore time to dust ourselves, put off the heavy load of anxieties and sadness, and encourage ourselves in the Lord as David did, because there’s so much more for us in Christ that we’re yet to uncover, and so many people yet to understand this… It is for this reason and in times like these that we intensify our efforts to have the gospel preached to every man, cause the world is fast turning into a more dangerous place to be in day after day, with so many souls lost to death without the assurance of salvation. The love of God in our hearts is what compels us, seeing as each of us has the same commission given, to preach the gospel to every creature! Knowing that there is a higher calling for the believer, this is the time to do all we can to grow so that others might grow; we spend more time in the place of prayer for the souls of men, we give ourselves to talking more about what Christ has done, we run with patience this race set before us, and pursue with renewed zeal the salvation of the souls of men.
2 Tim 2:3-5 (KJV)
3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
Paul speaks to Timothy in the verses above on how the Believer in Christ is to behave, He says that, like a soldier, the believer is to remove himself from all “entanglements”, making sure not to get distracted but to endure hardships so that the master who has called us, that is, Jesus Christ, would be pleased. Just like a soldier abandons all in the fight for his country, our hearts should let off all weights and take up with zeal and a renewed sense of purpose, the salvation of men.
Dear Christian Soldier, there is yet more for us to do, there are still territories yet to be reached with the light of the gospel, and hearts still hardened to the truth of Christ’s word, so take up your sword and fight in the place of prayer, give yourself to contending for the souls of men in prayer, get grounded in the word of God, that you may defend it when the time comes, and keep on digging deeper into the depths of the knowledge of Christ! We will not remain afraid, but we, with fearlessness and faith diligently fight the battle set before us, keeping the assurance of our faith intact, We have overcome already, and when it looks like we’re settling for less, we remind ourselves, there is more!
